Want to boost your child's reading enjoyment, confidence and motivation? Reading to therapy dogs is a great way to accomplish all that and more. Pooches & Pages is a monthly reading program at the Neenah Public Library for kids in first through fifth grades. Held the second Saturday of the month with a morning session starting at 10:00 am, each child is registered for a 15-minute appointment reading to a dog.
Fall 2015 dates: September 12, October 10, November 14
Reading to a therapy dog is fun and promotes reading in several ways: It increases a child's self-esteem relative to reading; it helps a children maintain focus for a longer period of time; it helps a child become more confident reading aloud; and it increases the motivation to read. The children read aloud to registered therapy dogs who listen patiently and without judgment for 15 minutes. The dogs are gentle, calm and polite and enjoy working with children. Each is carefully selected to ensure a safe and fun experience, and the owner/handlers are Neenah Public Library volunteers who love helping children become enthusiastic readers.
