Join us for a look back and a look ahead at ThedaCare. Theda Clark Peters dreamed of a better life for the people of her community. Before her sudden passing in 1903, just three days after giving birth to her only child, she made sure her hometown of Neenah would have a hospital to care for the sick and improve the health of all people. On October 18, 1909, the sixth birthday of Theda’s daughter, ThedaCare opened its first doors.
Did you know the nation’s top fighter pilot of World War II was from Wisconsin? Mike O’Connor author of the book “Ace of Aces” will discuss the life of United States Army Air Forces pilot Major Richard Bong of Poplar, Wisconsin. Major Bong was credited with shooting down 40 Japanese aircraft and earned the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross and was one of the most decorated pilots of the war.
Continuing our attention on the Hidden History of Doty Island, join the Neenah Historical Society for a presentation by Jeff Heimerman and Tom VanLieshout on the Doty Island Tennis Club. Its history dates back to the 1920s and includes famous tennis star names like Pancho Gonzales and Bobby Riggs. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the people and stories associated with this interesting part of Neenah and Menasha’s Doty Island history.
This year, 2020, marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote. Please join the Neenah Historical Society for a special presentation by the Winnebago County League of Women Voters and learn the local stories behind this long lasting and useful organization.
