We will discuss The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger. Download a copy of the audiobook or the ebook from Wisconsin's Digital Library. Stop by the second-floor Reference desk to pick up a copy from the library.

I look forward to discussing this title with you in the Yaz Room.

In 1958, a small Minnesota town is rocked by a shocking murder, pouring fresh fuel on old grievances in this dazzling novel, an instant New York Times bestseller and "a work of art" (The Denver Post).
On Memorial Day in Jewel, Minnesota, the body of wealthy landowner Jimmy Quinn is found floating in the Alabaster River, dead from a shotgun blast. The investigation falls to Sheriff Brody Dern, a highly decorated war hero who still carries the physical and emotional scars from his military service. Even before Dern has the results of the autopsy, vicious rumors begin to circulate that the killer must be Noah Bluestone, a Native American WWII veteran who has recently returned to Jewel with a Japanese wife. As suspicions and accusations mount and the town teeters on the edge of more violence, Dern struggles not only to find the truth of Quinn's murder but also put to rest the demons from his own past.

Caught up in the torrent of anger that sweeps through Jewel are a war widow and her adolescent son, the intrepid publisher of the local newspaper, an aging deputy, and a crusading female lawyer, all of whom struggle with their own tragic histories and harbor secrets that Quinn's death threatens to expose.

Both a complex, spellbinding mystery and a masterful portrait of mid-century American life that is "a novel to cherish" (Star Tribune, Minneapolis), The River We Remember offers an unflinching look at the wounds left by the wars we fight abroad and at home, a moving exploration of the ways in which we seek to heal, and a testament to the enduring power of the stories we tell about the places we call home.

The Chase by Candice Fox

The Chase is a modern The Fugitive with characters only #1 New York Times and Globe and Mail bestselling author Candice Fox can write.

“Are you listening, Warden?”
“What do you want?”
“I want you to let them out.”
“Which inmates are we talking about?”
“All of them.”

With that, the largest manhunt in United States history is on. In response to a hostage situation, more than 600 inmates from the Pronghorn Correctional Facility, including everyone on Death Row, are released into the Nevada Desert. Criminals considered the worst of the worst, monsters with dark, violent pasts, are getting farther away by the second.

John Kradle, convicted of murdering his wife and son, is one of the escapees. Now, desperate to discover what really happened that night, Kradle must avoid capture and work quickly to prove his innocence as law enforcement closes in on the fugitives.

Death Row Supervisor, and now fugitive-hunter, Celine Osbourne has focused all of her energy on catching Kradle and bringing him back to Death Row. She has very personal reasons for hating him – and she knows exactly where he’s heading...

Cookbook Book Club FAQ

Do I need to bring a dish to pass?

No. While we welcome book club members to bring a sample of a dish from a cookbook fitting the month's theme, it is not required.

If I don't bring a dish, can I still sample other dishes?

Yes. This isn't a potluck, just a gathering of home cooks sharing their experiences with cookbooks or cooking the foods of that month's theme.

Does a recipe or dish need to be from a cookbook dedicated to the month's theme?

No. Recipes can come from sections of cookbooks dedicated to the month's theme or could be a great family recipe you would like to share.

Do I need to do a formal review of the cookbook I read?

No. This isn't a book report club 😉. This is a casual gathering of cooks who want to help each other improve their kitchen skills and add to their recipe boxes.

If I bring a slow cooker, will there be an outlet available to plug it in?

We will do our best to make outlets available for slow cookers and other devices as needed.
