Hollywood vs. History: Ancient Rome with Gregory S. Aldrete, Author and Professor Emeritus of History and Humanistic Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay

Have you ever wondered how accurate your favorite Roman movie is? This talk will examine several of the most famous films set in ancient Rome, including Ben-Hur (1959) and Gladiator (2000), and reveal the historical accuracy of their plot, sets, costumes, and characters.  In addition you'll hear interesting stories about the challenges that the filmmakers faced in bringing ancient Rome to vivid cinematic life.  

Professor Aldrete was the Frankenthal Professor of History and Humanities at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, where he had been teaching since 1995. His emphasis is on rhetoric and oratory, floods in Rome, ancient Greek and Roman history, and daily life in the Roman world. He earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in ancient history from the University of Michigan.Aldrete speaks Latin, ancient Greek, Spanish, and can read texts in Italian, French, and German.

 

This program will last approximately one hour and will be held in the Shattuck Community Room on the first floor of the library.  No registration necessary.  Please contact the adult services desk with any questions at 920-886-6315.
