When you think of the accordion, you may remember Saturday night polka dances, or reruns of the Lawrence Welk Show. But the accordion is truly a global instrument, with a genre-spanning repertoire that reflects the diversity of cultures all over the world.

Accordionist Micah Sommersmith is fascinated by the broad reach of his chosen instrument. His curiosity has led him to a world far beyond the German and Polish dance tunes we know and love, and his program, “Accordion Around the World”, highlights some of the music he has found along the way.

The sounds of Micah’s accordion will transport you to the vineyards of Italy, the bayous of Louisiana, the tango halls of Argentina, and - of course! - the beer gardens of Germany, to name just a few stops on the journey.

Memory Cafés are for those experiencing early stage dementia, mild memory loss or cognitive impairment, and for family and friends of those affected. It’s a great opportunity for lively discussions, information gathering, refreshments, camaraderie, and lots of creative fun thrown in! We have a gerontology professional on hand to answer questions and an enormous wealth of experience among participants to be shared. We’d be delighted if you would join us!

Sponsored by the Fox Valley Memory Project, Neenah Library, and Valley VNA.

This program was made possible by the Friends of the Neenah Library and the Neenah Public Library Trust Fund. Donations to the Friends and the Trust Fund are always accepted and appreciated.

The Neenah Public Library, in collaboration with Deb Skyrms, will offer a free four-week course on “Mindful Living”. The four-week class will be held at the Neenah Public Library on Mondays in October, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The class is free; registration is required. Please call to register: 920-886-6315. Class size is limited.

Class participants will explore the many benefits of living mindfully – resulting in a less stressful life. You’ll learn how to meditate, manage emotions, and challenge negative thoughts. Throughout the class, the book, Slowing Down to the Speed of Life, by Richard Carlson and Joseph Bailey, rev. ed. 2009, will be used in discussions. Copies of the book will be available for checkout by participants.

The class will be taught by Deb Skyrms, a Licensed Professional Counselor. Deb was a mental health therapist for ThedaCare and most recently an adjunct faculty member at Fox Valley Technical College teaching the class, “Living Mindfully.”

Please join Julie Olson, from Hearing Loss Association of America, on October 23rd at 6.30 pm as she good-humoredly offers valuable advice from her own experience as a person with hearing loss and from her involvement in HLAA for living and thriving with hearing loss. Nearly 20% of the population has some degree of hearing loss; while almost 100% cares about someone who has it. Yet, people hide it and deny they have it. The consequences of denial are serious as they tend to lead to social isolation, depression, and even cognitive decline. Share a light-hearted evening with us and gain insight into what can be most helpful in one’s journey to live well with hearing loss. HLAA is a consumer-based organization that does not sell or endorse products or providers. No registration necessary.
