Nicaragua: Birds and Bird Conservation with Bill Volkert, Naturalist. – Since 2002, Bill has made 7 trips to Nicaragua in an effort to promote conservation and education programs for migratory and resident birds.  Many of these are the same birds that nest here in summer and his work has been a cooperative effort with the scientists in Nicaragua to protect these birds on both ends of their migration.  In addition to his work with ornithologists he has discovered many other facets of this interesting land as he explored many of the country’s national parks, protected areas and wild lands.

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America with over 700 species of birds and possesses a unique landscape that has been formed by tremendous geological forces. This is the land of volcanoes and this unique landscape provides the foundation for a diversity of habitats and a wide variety of wildlife.  This presentation will focus on the birds and habitats in Nicaragua.

Books will be available for purchase at the presentation.

Bill worked as the naturalist and wildlife educator for Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at Horicon Marsh for 27 years, where he conducted more than 3,700 education programs for over 220,000 people.  His broad audiences included 66 delegations of scientists from 43 countries who came for professional training.  In his personal time he has traveled widely in search of the world's birds and the wild places they inhabit.  His travels have taken him throughout Central and South America, across the Canadian Arctic, to Africa, India, Southeast Asia, Borneo, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and Mongolia.
