2018 Fox Cities Book FestivalThe Fox Cities Book Festival is excited to welcome back author and Neenah native, Susan Amond Todd.

Since 1985, Susan Amond Todd, a native of Neenah, made many trips from Charlotte, NC down I-95 to Jacksonville, FL. Toward the end of the 90’s she noticed a bridge off in the distance after the Brunswick, GA exit she hadn’t seen before. The bridge looked impressive, becoming a landmark she watched for whenever they made the trip to visit her in-laws. She wondered what it was connecting, thinking one of these trips she would stop to find out but never seemed to have the time to do so. Little did she know that one day, not only would she find out where the bridge went, but also fall in love with the area it connected so much she would be inspired to incorporate it into her writing of her first book, White Lake and the sequel, Return Home. In her program St. Simons and Jekyll Islands: Where the Bridge Leads she’ll share the sights and places her characters frequented along with history of the area. When she’s done, you too, will want to plan a trip to these Islands.

The 2018 Fox Cities Book Festival presents author and Fox Cities native, Jim Guhl.

Jim Guhl’s new novel, Eleven Miles to Oshkosh, takes readers back to a 1970's Wisconsin where he tells the story of a teenage boy coming to age as he deals with the unsolved murder of his father.

As the Vietnam War grinds on and the Nixon presidency collapses, Del “Minnow” Finwick’s small world in Wisconsin has blown apart. His father, a deputy sheriff, has been murdered by the unknown “Highway 41 Killer.” His mom has unraveled. And a goon named Larry Buskin has been pummeling Minnow behind Neenah High. Minnow finds support in the company of his roguish grandfather, his loyal pal Mark, and beautiful Opal Parsons, who has her own worries as the first African American student in their school. When the sheriff seems in no hurry to solve the murder, Minnow must seek justice by partnering with unlikely allies and discovering his own courage.

Jim Guhl grew up in the Fox Valley of Wisconsin in the 1960s and '70s and now lives in Hudson, Wisconsin. He is a writer and visual artist, retired from a career in engineering. The 11th Annual Fox Cities Book Festival presents author, David McGlynn.

Fatherhood caught David McGlynn by surprise. His sons arrived in quick succession―the first when the author was a dirt-poor student and the second not long after he’d moved his family across the country to start a new job in bucolic Wisconsin. As a result, McGlynn found himself colliding with fatherhood, at once scared to death and utterly thrilled. Just like many new fathers, he hopes he’s doing the right thing―but he’s never quite sure.

One Day You’ll Thank Me translates the small, often hilarious moments common among parents of young children, especially dads, into “life lessons” about fatherhood. Comprised of interconnected chapters―many of which have appeared in such prominent publications as The New York Times, Men’s Health, Parents, Real Simple, and O, The Oprah Magazine―the stories invoke a sense of humor and honesty that expand our understanding of what it means to be an American dad.

The 11th Annual Fox Cities Book Festival presents author Kathy Buchen.

It’s a grim world out there.  Perhaps you need a nice, wholesome cozy murder mystery to lift your spirits.  Modern life can be poisonous.  Spend an hour with Kathy and her amateur sleuth, Rhiannon Nolan.  It might be just the antidote you require.  Each visit with Rhi will be slightly different and unique.  However, at each session we will laugh, talk about plots full of twists and turns of fate, discuss the finer points of stock mystery characters, and definitely digest some pink Cadillac gummy candy along with our red herrings.  Take a peek at all eight novels in the series, and race to the finish line with Rhi as she deals with dilemmas caused by killers, psychos, teenagers, the meanest pig in history, and the cheese head version of the Hound of the Baskervilles.  Will Rhiannon prevail and finally triumph?  It’s a cold, cruel world.  Come in for some warmth, some laughs, and a whole lot of good, clean, murderous fun.

The 11th Annual Fox Cities Book Festival presents author John Mitchell.

Writer and filmmaker John Mitchell gives his humorous take on the crazy chaos of self-distribution in the film and the self-publishing world.

From the creative process of bringing a project to its final form, to the legal challenges of copyrights and permissions, and ultimately the seeming nightmare of finding distribution and marketing channels that work, it takes a whole lot of tenacity, passion and determination with just a hint of insanity to do self-distribution, and even then your work has just begun.

The 11th Annual Fox Cities Book Festival presents an event with author, Linda Vander Heyden.

In summer through late fall, milkweed grows lush along the sides of the road. Milkweed is the only plant on which monarchs lay their eggs—and the only plant monarch caterpillars eat! One day, while walking with her dogs, Linda Vander Heyden discovered all the milkweed along her road had been mowed and lay drying in the sun. Monarch caterpillars clung to the wilted plants. How would they survive? She began gathering caterpillars as people walked past. On that day, she doubt she saved many. But she wanted to tell their story. Monarch populations have dropped by 90% in the last two decades. Monarchs face many challenges, and scientists are concerned there may come a time when they no longer exist.

McGinty’s Monarchs (Sleeping Bear Press, 2016) will engage and empower children to know they, too, can play an important role in the survival of these beautiful butterflies.

Join her protagonist, Mr. McGinty, and embark on a mission to learn about the lifecycle of monarchs…from eggs, to caterpillars, to chrysalises—to butterflies! And the joy of turning your passion into a picture book!

An affidavit is “a sworn statement of fact voluntarily made by an affiant under oath.” To this end, our life stories, written and/or spoken, are affidavits culled from everyday experience. In writing memoir, we witness and record what happens to us. Writing memoir is the art of blending past selves with the present self to create meaning. Please join Laura Jean Baker, author of The Motherhood Affidavits, to learn how her braided memoir might serve as a template for your own life story.

The 11th Annual Fox Cities Book Festival presents an event with author, Scott Winkler.

Stories and the Lives They Save explores the idea that the very stories we share and receive are as essential to our survival as food, water, and shelter.  They help us make sense of our world.  They save our lives.  This epiphany served as the catalyst for The Meadow.  The novel grew out of my desire to voice recurring themes from my scholarship and teaching, themes that writers, scholars, and healers of every stripe have explored for millennia: psychologist Jonathan Shay treats veterans’ psychological injuries by creating safe communities where their stories can both be told and heard; writer/director/translator Bryan Doerries revisits the classics of Sophocles and Aeschylus, recasting their works as essential to healing moral injury.  Novelist Tim O’Brien’s body of work takes up both of these strands while exploring the idea that stories save not only the survivors of armed conflict, but the very frameworks within which these men and women function—their families and friends, their communities and nations.  And these are the reasons Scott writes.  He wants stomachs to believe and stories to save lives. Stories and the Lives They Save will briefly address these ideas prior to reading an excerpt from The Meadow.
